Moment Of Truth
I knew I had a tiny bit of racism in me the moment I...
Some 2/3 years ago, I had gone to the bank to make a deposit and I saw an Hausa man at the counter making payment. No, he wasn't one of those rich nor educated Hausa men but one of those we generally refer to as "Aboki" (iron condemn or shoe shiners type).
Immediately I noticed him, I muttered "hei, so aboki get account and is even funding it with so so amount". I have a very good relationship with them and people of other race generally but this was something I did in expression of surprise to the fact that they have an account to pay money... sadly, I made same statement when I noticed one using Samsung (S7edge or so). The narratives has made us believe that they are less and can't be more and I just couldn't help it but express my shock to the fact that they're fast rising.
I got home and repeated the same statement to the hearing of my mom and thank God she corrected me. I just couldn't believe it as what I saw was entirely different from what we have been made to believe about them.
Now that I think about it, I see how much of a racist I was unknown to me.
We all get angry whenever the whites or people of other race and colour treats us unjustly because we are blacks not knowing that the same racism we detest and speak against lives low in us. This is one place we fail greatly as blacks. We want to be treated accordingly and in the right manner yet we fail to treat ourselves well. What does that make us? I ask.
Colour, language, tribe... we are all one, created by one and from one root. Let's treat others rightly. Our actions and inaction matters, the way we see people, what we think about them matters a lot.
You want to be treated fairly, treat others fairly.
You want to be held in high esteem, hold others irrespective of their tribe or colour in high esteem. THANK YOU
